For many, the Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps may be nothing more than people in the background at football games and other public events. But for some 500 residents this year, they just might have been the difference between life and death.
From January 1 through June 30, the corps responded to 251 calls from Wilton senior living facilities and 250 from private homes.
WVAC President Ron Hitter says the corps received some 1,400 calls last year, about 40 percent of them from facilities for seniors. This year about 38 percent of the 649 calls received so far were from homes for the elderly.
