Every year around the Fourth of July Americans use fireworks and sparklers to celebrate the nation’s birthday. The use of those items often lead to people injuring themselves, but that was not the case this year in Wilton, according to the EMS log for July 1 through July 11.
"Overall a quiet Fourth holiday," Wilton Volunteer Ambulance Corps President Ron Hitter said in an email. He said the corps only received one call to the athletic fields during the town's fireworks show, and that was for a laceration.
Hitter also said there was nothing really unusual about the log. He did point out that they received eight calls for difficulty breathing, higher than usual, and attributed it to the recent heat wave. Overall, the corps received 42 calls, 34 of which led to transports to the hospital. The majority of calls, 20, were to private residences. Senior living facilities were second at 14, all of which ended with transports to the hospital.
